If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secure. ~ Proverbs 29:14
Today’s lesson (cuz it’s Sunday), is another excerpt from the dating study. This week, we’re talking about the Holy Spirit.
HOLY SPIRIT – –
The Holy Spirit is just as important a member of the Trinity as the Father and the Son. And He is a person, just like the Father and Son, not an ‘it’. We know that once we come to salvation through Jesus Christ, that He is given to us and lives within us (John 14:15-18). But what does that mean? The best way I can think of to explain it is by sharing a true story.
A friend and co-worker of mine grew up and became an adult without knowing much of anything about the things of God. She never attended church and had very little contact with Christians (that she knew of anyway). She came to me seeking God, and I had the privilege of teaching her for several weeks before she became a Christian. She made a private decision at her home to ask Jesus into her heart. A few days later, as we began our time of study together, she told me she had become a believer. When I asked her how she knew she had become a Christian, she began to name ways her life and thinking had changed, almost instantaneously. I knew immediately that she was naming the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians Chapter 5! I must have looked stunned, because she asked me what was wrong. I had her open her Bible and locate Galatians 5:22-23 and read the list. And then we talked about how the Holy Spirit’s presence in her life had made these changes in her. Remarkable!
But His job is so much more than just the initial life-transformation that takes place at the time of our salvation. He intercedes for us in prayer (Romans 8:26-27), grants us supernatural power (Acts 1:8), guides us in truth (John 16:13), teaches (John 14:26), convicts us of sin (John 16:7-11), brings to mind things God wants us to know (I Corinthians 2:10-11), gives us gifts beyond our natural abilities (Galatians 5:22-23), is our source for revelation, wisdom and power (Ephesians 1:17-20), and speaks for/through us (Luke 12:11-12).
The Holy Spirit is one of God’s gifts to us (Acts 2:38). The seal of our salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14). Proof that we belong to God. Because He is God, His power is limitless. And we, as believers who have the Holy Spirit indwelling us, have the privilege of being able to call upon that power. The Holy Spirit has brought about many amazing things through and for God’s children over thousands of years – since before time for us began (Genesis 1:2, 26). In my humble opinion, the transforming power of salvation in the life of us mere sin-filled mortals, is the greatest of these. And the fact that the eternal God would choose to indwell each of us, is truly miraculous.
Solely for the purpose of getting in a few steps and getting outside the coach, we put on our ‘walk-about-town’ clothes (meaning nice shorts and tops) and took a walk around downtown Wakeeney today, where we found . . .
Nothing much. 😊
They have a wonderfully built courthouse and city building, and little cut-out Christmas trees scattered up and down Main Street, but that’s pretty much it. There wasn’t even any traffic! It kinda felt like a ghost town, but maybe that’s because it’s Sunday and all the businesses were closed.
We did, however, discover one open business – the grocery store. We saw just a couple of people there, and none were wearing masks, which, I never thought I’d say this – – seemed strange. We stopped in a bought a couple of bananas, and rushed out, never coming within 20’ of anyone. Except the cashier, who was wearing a mask and had a large plexiglass shield with a tiny hole for money to exchange hands.
After our walk, we came home and finished our cleaning, then hit the pool again, until a family came in and edged us out with their jubilant water play. 😊
One more thing. We’ve noticed something unique about this campground. The people are very transient. They begin arriving from late afternoon until bedtime, and are out early the next morning, or at the latest by check-out time at 11:00am. So strange! We are however half way between Kansas City and Denver on I-70. Most of the time we’re here with only 3-4 other campers! It’s very quiet. . . .
This is what we wake up to – – every morning. : )
