Take The Long Way Home      3/28/18

Jennings Ferry Campground, Akron, Alabama

We moved today and what was supposed to be a (3-hour) journey, ended up being over 5 as we sat in traffic for over two hours!  We were near the Mississippi/Alabama border when signs popped up telling us that everyone – as in, absolutely everyone had to take the next exit! The expressway was closed!  We heard the problem was an overturned semi.  The exit was still 5 miles away.  All we could do was wait.  At least we had the advantage of being self-contained.  We could stand, eat, whatever.  I don’t know how others managed.

So Blaine followed the trucks.  Once we got to the exit, we found ourselves winding through a small town on skinny roads and under low bridges in a long, slow line like a bunch of sedated ants.

Here’s our exit!
Not really . . . it’s our detour.

Look how empty the expressway is.

They need to take one of those 5’s off there.

But if the semis could make it, we knew we could too.

Dinner was supposed to take 2 hours to make and now I didn’t have that kind of time, so I had to improvise.  I think I did pretty well!

Cube steaks were breaded and fried, brown gravy with horseradish, instant mashed potatoes dressed up with sour cream and fresh green beans.  It was pretty good, if I do say so myself!

But my cleaning suffered for it.  It was “a lick and a promise”.  Next move, I’ll do better.

As we walked around our new digs, we stopped to say “Hi” to a couple standing by the river.  They were waiting for a barge, so we waited with them.  Fun!
