Northgate RV Travel Park, Athens, Alabama

We’ve not been our normal robust, active selves for about a week, as I’m sure some of you have noticed.  And I haven’t said anything because no one wants to read whining.  Besides, I don’t have the energy to whine.

Blaine’s been struggling with back/hip pain.  It’s kept him pretty immobile, relaxing and stretching, trying to get back up and running again.  Meanwhile, I’ve been dealing with an almost constant wave of hot flashes.  They’re exhausting and they interrupt my sleep.

In addition, the weather’s been cold and windy with some rain or sleet mixed in.  Not very conducive to sight-seeing.  But we have been able to listen to Tom Hamilton call the freezing (literally!) cold Cleveland Indians games!  And were even able to catch a couple of them on TV.

So here we are.  On our last day in Alabama.  We haven’t even made it downtown to walk around the historic section.  Hopefully today.

I said I didn’t have the energy to whine, and yet, that’s exactly what this sounds like, doesn’t it?

UPDATE:   We made it to Athens.  But only for a little while.  Blaine is still hurting.

It was a beautiful day today!  And the sun finally made an appearance!  So after lunch, we drove downtown, parked and went for a walk.  It’s funny. Many of the buildings and even homes resemble the Parthenon or Acropolis in Athens, Greece, with the large columns and the triangle “top”.  I’m sure that’s by design because of the name.  It looks like even the new high school they’re building will have the same front.  (no pictures of the school, sorry, but it’s gigantic!)

An old house that looks like someone’s working on it.

U.G. White Mercantile
Since 1917

U.G. White
Cool store!

U.G. White

One side of the Courthouse
It takes up an entire block in the center of town!
And it has doors on all four sides.
We shoulda gone in and looked around . . .

His statue is standing in front of the courthouse

We assumed this is a B&B?

This is the Methodist Church

This one’s the Presbyterian

Too bad the new handrail’s there

See what the bench says?

Does the close up help?
Pretty neat, huh?

Courthouse

The “front” of the Courthouse.
Of course the other side could also be the front. : )
Who’s that on the steps?

Former Tavern site

There were THREE barbers on the square!
And all of them had the spinning barber poles.
We liked the name of this one – Shireman’s.
Get it? Shear – man? lol!

You can’t beat it!
City Hall haha

The front of the courthouse
We think this is the real front because of the flag.

Aren’t the trees beautiful?!

This town was originally a camping ground for Cherokee Indians, who sold it to the United States in 1806  (I didn’t know Indians ever sold land).  The city was opened to settlement in 1814 and was incorporated in 1818.  Someone (I couldn’t find out who) decided to name it after the city in Greece.

Nice sunset to end the day.
