Return To The States     8/06/18

Wawa RV Resort and Campground, Wawa, Ontario, Canada

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  Philippians 2:9-11

We were up and at ‘em early this morning.

Breakfast of champions!
Brown Sugar frosted Mini-Wheats (only available in Canada), wild fresh-picked blueberries, orange juice, and Canadian milk – in a carton. : )

It was moving day, and we had at least a 3 hour drive ahead of us, plus stops.  Our first stop was to refuel the coach.  We made it all the way through Canada – Grand Portage, MN to Sault Ste Marie, MI – a distance of 542 miles.

Today was supposed to be one of the “Best Drives in Ontario”, but we didn’t agree. There just wasn’t much to see, and it had nothing to do with the fact that the weather went from foggy, to sun (for a few minutes 😊) to cloudy, back to foggy again, and finally a few sprinkles of rain.  We also had a ‘roller coaster’ ride what with all the up and down hills.   I can understand why it took so long to build the Trans-Canada highway!  Anyway, you’ve seen some of our travel day pictures, so you be the judge.

Entering Sault Ste. Marie.
And no, I have absolutely no idea why it’s pronounced, “Soo Saint Marie”. . .

As we neared the Canadian/USA border, we first had to cross the International Bridge.  This was a feat in itself because it wasn’t clearly marked.  Fortunately, we were able to drive around the block and try again.

This is a very small portion of the line waiting to enter Canada.
There were only about six cars going into the US when we went through.
Oh. And this is the International Bridge.

The bridge on the right looks really old.

How pretty the water is!

Our way in.
It was barely, and I mean BARELY wide enough to accommodate us.

The border stop was pretty quick.  And here’s a tip for you – – listen carefully to what they ask you and be truthful in your answer.  She asked specifically if we had potatoes, onions or peppers.  I knew we had no potatoes or onions in my empty bin where I keep them, but I forgot about the almost used up red onion in the vegetable drawer.  I knew there were two slivers of red and green pepper in said drawer, but they were slivers for cryin’ out loud.  Slivers.  As in maybe ½” wide.  I said no to all.  Then she asked about alcohol.  Our answer is always no, because we don’t drink.  I forgot about the white wine we’d bought a while ago that I occasionally use for cooking.  Anyway, she asked to come aboard and searched a couple of cupboards – and confiscated the peppers!  She was very nice in everything thing she did and said, including when she told us that yes, the slivers count and in the future we need to declare anything they mention because they can fine us $300 for EACH item.  Are you kidding me????  She didn’t fine us, thank the Good Lord, but I still can’t get over the fact that she took those peppers!

Immediately following the border check, we had to pay a $12 toll to re-enter the US.  Man, I swear they certainly weren’t encouraging us to come back home!

This is the toll both.

This is an example of the directions Blaine gives me when we move.
This one’s pretty extensive and kept me busy once we got through the border.

Sault Ste Marie is actually a town in two countries! That’s gotta be really confusing!
Be that as it may, this is the entrance to the US part.

But the best thing about being back (at least so far), is we have our phone service back!  No more Rogers for me!  That’s all my phone would pick up, and while it worked for text and sometimes for phone calls if I stood on one foot and hopped up and down on top of  a large rock on a mountaintop, I had zero internet capabilities.  Not even with four bars of service.

So here we are, set up about 4 hours after we left Wawa.  It’s a unique view we have from our back – and front – windows!

And the next best thing about being back in the States? The grocery shelves are stocked and the local Wal-Mart had absolutely everything that was on our extensive list!  The bad thing?  It cost us $172 – and there’s no exchange rate to aid with sticker shock!  But to be fair, we did have quite a cart full of all kinds of things.

There’s a Rotary Island Park right next to the campground, so we took a walk to check it out.  It’s a nice little park, and we watched another ship pass by.

Isn’t this interesting?

We also passed a burger stand that had eat-in and curb service.  It must be really good because at 7pm, their parking lot was full!  We absolutely must check it out before we leave here!
