When Life Gives You Lemons 02/16/19

Lake Louisa State Park, Clermont, Florida

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.  Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. ~ Colossians 3:12-14

I wanted to share some of the history of this State Park, so I’ve written some excerpts from their brochure:

Lake Louisa is the largest in a chain of 13 lakes connected by the Palatlakaha River.  The Park contains 11 distinct natural communities, including:  sandhills, scrub, upland mixed forest, swamp, marsh, wet flatwoods, hydric hammock, blackwater stream and old citrus grove.  Let’s focus on the citrus grove part.  😊

In 1943, the Bronson family acquired some of the property and established orange groves and a cattle ranch.  Acres of old pasture and some of the orange groves from this era can still be seen in the Park today.  Purchased by the state in 1973, the Lake Louisa property became a State Park in 1974 and opened to the public in 1977.

So now we know why there’s orange trees everywhere!

But that’s not all!  Today, Blaine and I went for a walk and found something else!

Can you believe our trail goes behind someone’s campsite? And I mean RIGHT behind!
And we have to go around the locked gate.
What do you supposed he’s doing?
Picking a lemon! A real, honest to goodness lemon! Wonder if they’re any good?
They have cabins here that you can rent for about $130/night.
To continue our walk, we had to go alongside the road for a bit.
Those specs way up there are Sandhill Cranes. We know that’s what they are because Sandhills have a very distinctive sound.
Cactus! I’m always surprised to find this stuff anywhere except out West.
It’s good someone put logs here, or we would’ve had to turn around.
A bat box! Don’t think it’s being used though. It’s too clean. According to the sign, a Boy Scout put it here several years ago.
This was just a tiny little thing!
So wondrous!
We didn’t pick anymore oranges.
But we did go back and get more lemons!
A pack stuffed full!

When life gives you lemons, what do you do?

Make lemonade of course!

We didn’t know how many we’d need, or even if they’d have any juice in them.
We were ecstatic to discover they were perfect!
Mmmm . . . . mmmm . . . . good!!!!

6 cups water

1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 6 lemons)

½ – 1 cup sugar (I only used ½ cup)

And another beautiful sunset!  Why is it that some places have these, and others don’t?
