Mont Joseph 08/16/19

Camping sur Mer, Carleton-sur-Mer, Quebec, Canada

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.  ~ Proverbs 12:1

Guess what!  “The Powers That Be” must have heard my frustrated grumbling!  You know “they” have ears everywhere, just ask Google or Alexa or Siri.  Either that, or God put a bug in their ear. . . Two more updates later (this afternoon), and my pictures are working normally and the ‘saving document’ bar is working again!  YAY!!

Our hike today was to the top of Mont Joseph – another steep climb, but this hike was up and down like radio waves.  You know what I’m talking about?

Radio waves.  😊  (Hey!  Let’s not be too critical of my drawing skills!  Have you ever tried to draw with a mouse?  They tend to squirm.)

This was in the parking lot.
Something about paying $30 for an annual membership (or something).
We don’t know why, because all the trails are free . . . .
That white sign had yellow flashing lights.
You just know we had to go check that out!
It was the little sign on the left that garnered most of our attention.
Keep away – Falling ice.
Looks like a drive in our future . . . : )
Time to get started.

Once we got started, the trail became more and more precarious too!  I thought of what the Irish Catholics always seem to say when there’s some kind of crisis mounting – – “Saints preserve us!!”, but I found myself more often quoting Carrie Underwood – “Jesus take the wheel!”  Or praying – “Keep my feet on the narrow path!”

It looks wider in the picture. . .
What?? No headphones? How do they expect Americans to hike here??
Just os you know, Blaine nor I would never in a million years wear headphones when we’re out in the ‘wild’. And we don’t understand why you would. Why take away one of your senses? You can’t hear the birds, or the leaves rustling in the breeze, or each other, or your boots hitting the trail, or the deer running just out of sight, or the bears or moose trying to sneak up on you, and the list goes on and on.
That’s pretty much what a lot of our trail looked like – only much further off the ground!

And because it wasn’t scary enough as it was, let’s add some mountain bikes and share the trail!  Not always, but at times, we had to share with the bikers.  Fortunately, we didn’t cross paths with any on our trail.  We did, however see a few on their ‘bike-only’ trails.

See! Share the “Road” signs!
I do not like that, Sam-I-Am!

Believe it or not, Blaine’s a cautious adventurer, weighing risks, etc.  I know some of you doubt that when you see him living life literally on the edge, but overall, he’s pretty cautious.  On the other hand, I tend to lean towards reckless abandon.  When I see something I think might be interesting or fun, I’m all set – “Let’s go!”  With no thought to potential hazards (i.e. – I would’ve paddled right under that hole in Perce Rock, or at least tried to walk under it)  But not always, and definitely not today!  This was one scary trail!  And sure as I live and breathe, when Blaine edits this, his eyes will roll if not physically, at least subconsciously.  But this is one time I’m not exaggerating about the potential for slip-sliding away.

All that said, it was still a beautiful hike – especially once we got to the waterfall area.  They had extensive wooden walkways (nice wide ones! 😊) to facilitate taking in the waterfalls and river/creek.  Lots of extra steps and stairs, but it was worth it!

Once we arrived at this bridge, we could see the network of wooden walkways and stairways.
We discussed adding the extra steps and climbs for only a moment. We couldn’t possibly pass it up!
So Blaine went down to the first lookout area while I waited.
I wanted a perspective picture. Can you find him? : )
And that’s not just a picture of a waterfall.
What else do you see? : )
Heading out to where Blaine is waiting for me.
At least I hope he is!
Time to get back on our original trail, but what a gorgeous detour!
Hand-written signs don’t inspire much confidence in me . . .
Down there’s a bike path, complete with a mirror on the corner.
It’s also our hiking trail . . . Yikes!
Too bad these trees fell over and marred the view.
Something different than what we’ve been seeing today. : )
We’re heading to another overlook.
Which means, extra everything. . . .
I should’ve waited just a bit longer to take this picture so you could have a better idea of how steep this spur trail was! Straight back down the mountain! And you know what that means . . . It’s also straight back up!
Beautiful view!
And a nice bench to rest up before we head up.
There’s those “Christmas” pine cones again.
Different pine tree, different cones.
Up we go! Back to our trail.
We get to seperate here. Yay!
A covert shot.
Well, you can’t let them see you taking pictures of them now can you?
It’s just my way of proving that there really were bike riders.
We’ve gone as far as we can go today.
Time to finish our loop and get back home.
The only thing seperating us from the bikers is this row of rocks. . . .
The views back were much more open.
That’s someone’s house!
How they get in and out of the mountain, is anyone’s guess.
Looks like we came to a dead end!
But once we got closer, we found the turn. : )

We enjoyed our unplanned drive too!

Time to take a drive up that gravel road from the parking lot. You know, the one with the falling ice?
Since we’re not walking or driving a snowmobile, we should be okay. : )
One of these pretty bushes was at our chosen lunch spot.
So was a hoard of gnats!
We used one hand for eating, the other for shooing!
I suppose we could’ve left, but we were hungry and we imagined they could be anywhere we might stop,
so we just made the best of it.
Even overcast, it was still a spectacular view!
There’s those icey windmills!
More views as we drove around.
Blaine took a side road . . .
. . . . that ended in a lovely dead-end.
Great spot to enjoy the scenery though.
And no gnats! Had we only known . . .
They were working up here.

We stopped at the local grocery store on the way home and impulsively purchased dinner.  They had these beautiful looking stuffed beef pinwheels.  Now, I’ve never made these things, but I’ve seen them.  You can stuff them with anything – lay out thin slices of good quality beef (like flank steak), lay on your ingredients, roll it up, tie a string around it to hold it together, refrigerate to firm it up, then slice into about 1” slices – or so the internet said. These seemed to have swiss cheese, red and yellow bell peppers, red onion and spinach.  I say “seemed” because we couldn’t read the ingredients posted in French.  😊  Since I’ve never made them, I had to Google it.  You can roast or fry.  I chose to fry in just a tiny amount of pecan oil, then added a splash of red wine I keep for cooking.

Don’t those look wonderful?!?
They were!

They tasted as wonderful as they looked!  We also picked up corn on the cob, which was also delicious!  And at $4 each, a pretty economical meal.  I’m trying to talk Blaine into picking up a few more and freezing them for later.  We’ll see.
