A Coyote Morning 02/25/20

Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, El Paso, Texas

A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.  ~ Proverbs 20:19

First thing this morning, as we’re gazing out the windshield at the gorgeous morning and the couple of rabbits hopping about, a coyote came wandering up the street in front of us!  Probably spotted the movement of the rabbits and came looking for breakfast.  If he found it, it was beyond our view, thank goodness!  He’s supposed to be looking for roadrunners anyway. . . .

Time to pack up and hit the road, leaving this extraordinary place behind, but not our memories.  Hey, why do you think I keep this blog?  It’s because my memory needs all the help it can get!  It’s really not to make our family and friends nervous with our antics.

We passed a bunch of unusual (at least for us) signs today during our 235-mile, 5 ½-hour drive, including stops for fuel and Wal-Mart shopping.  Signs like, “Dust Storms Next 15 Miles” and “Don’t pick up hitchhikers in this area; prison nearby”.

This is a campsite in Hueco Tanks.
I parked the Jeep here while Blaine’s at the dump station.
Last time to open and close the gate!
This is a screen shot from my phone.
At the time I was taking this, all four were the same temperature!
Wadsworth changed right at the last second. : )
The top two are important towns back home where family is.
Then, there’s Carlsbad where we left the other day,
the bottom one is where we’re at. Pretty funny!
There ended up being more of a story here than we knew!
This is the bed of a huge earth moving dump truck, and as the sign says, it’s an oversized load.
And it’s hanging out into our lane!
Blaine managed to scoot around it and we went on our merry way.
Later, at our next stop and after Taco Tuesday (you’ll see later), our new neighbors (also from Ohio) told us that they were held up a couple of hours because of this thing blocking traffic! Guess we were blessed!
We drove around a military base as we went through El Paso.
We think this is military housing.
This was a really long hill!
New State! New Mexico!
Again! : )
Very nice ‘Welcome’ sign!
Everyone had to drive through the inspection station.
And that’s all we did. Just drive through. They waved us on.
We raced a train for about 15 minutes.
This is the center. The thing must’ve had over a hundred cars on it!
We have not, and did not, see it.
Unless they’re talking about the picture we took yesterday?? : )
Love this picture!!!
We crossed the Continental Divide!
If you look, you can see the dust flying up ahead, but not really over the road, so that’s great!
Signs you won’t see just anywhere . . . .
Sand! Lots and lots of sand!
We’re headed for Rodeo.
Where’s the road for cryin’ out loud?!?
We’re certain that’s snow up there!

While the drive took us through some beautiful mountains as well as flatlands, it also wreaked havoc with gas mileage because of the steep terrain in places and very, very high winds!  We were down to 7.4mpg!  And Blaine commented that it’s the most wind he’s ever had to drive in.  It’s good it was relatively traffic-free.

I don’t know if you remember or not, but I previously posted that I-10 runs 880.5 miles across Texas from Louisiana to New Mexico.  We began our journey as we first got on it at the Louisiana/Texas border and today (roughly 6 weeks later), have finally reached the other end at the Texas/New Mexico border.

We’re here!

What a special treat we were greeted with when we entered this oasis in the desert!  Today was ‘Taco Tuesday’ in the campground!  And we were invited at a mere cost of $4/each.  It would’ve been $2, but since dinner was only an hour away, we had no time to prepare a covered dish to share.

This place was too packed with people and food to take the picture at the time.
We re-visited the room the next day. : )
Isn’t this a beautiful cactus?
I don’t know what it is, but a woman last night said she started it from just a shoot years ago.

The tacos – and all the rest of the food – were a tasty treat!  And we fellowshipped with another couple from . . . . somewhere in the United States (we can’t remember where 😊).  They’d been here to view the stars, which we were told were incredible and the campground keeps the place as a ‘dark site’ for just that reason.  A lot of the people in the campground are amateur astronomers.  We discovered tonight why that is!  An absolutely, indescribable sky!  It was so full of stars that most of us never see!  And we could see the Milky Way as well!  Just with our naked eyes!  We didn’t spend a long time in awe because I started shivering, but WOW!!  I look at that, and marvel that anyone could make figures (big dipper, Orion’s belt, astrology signs, etc.) out of all that!  And you know, back in ancient history, the skies were probably even more magnificently displayed because of the lack of electric lights washing out the sky.

What a symbol God has provided us as proof of His Greatness!!!  Thank You!
