Hummingbirds And Ground Squirrels 03/09/20

Patagonia Lake State Park, Patagonia, Arizona

The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.  ~ Proverbs 21:8

One last look at the mountain we conquered!
Well, Blaine conquered it, I just came really close. : )

Before we say our final farewells to Patagonia this morning and embark on an 89 mile 2-hour journey to the Tucson, Arizona area, I want to add something I keep forgetting about.  (Mostly because we were never able to capture a picture.)  We’ve been visited by hummingbirds nearly every day of our visit here!  They come by and look in the windshield, or the side mirrors and hover for a bit before taking off at lightning speed.  And they are beyond stunning to see!  I found some pictures on-line that look like the ones we’ve been seeing, so you can enjoy them too!

With the exception of having to pass through yet another Border checkpoint, the drive was uneventful.

Well, there was also the scenery . . .   😊

Someone probably paid a lot of money to have those trees planted in their yard.
Well, you either stop, or run over the Border Patrol Agent standing in the middle of the road. . . .
Lots of cameras again!
And a sign that a drug dog was on duty.
“Are you US citizens?”
“Yes.”
And we were waved on. That’s it.
We’ll be re-entering I-10 again. : )
It’s like we’re in Texas again!
Look at that long, straight stretch of road!
Right into a mountain range!
That’s our exit.
We could go back to Nogales from here. . .
Our first saguaro cactus sighting!
This is what we remember from our previous visit to Tucson when we were vacationing.
Before “vacationing” became a full-time job. : )
Palm Trees!
I’m guessing they’re imported.
I don’t think they’re native to the area.
That’s nice! You’re State tax refund can be given to the Parks Service.
I would imagine you can do that anywhere, but it’s the first time we’ve seen a billboard for it. : )
This road is waaay worse than any Ohio roads!
Don’t know what would cause it, unless it’s the extreme heat in the summer.

Catalina State Park, Tucson, Arizona

Settle in and get comfortable, because we’re parked here for the next two weeks.  It remains to be seen if there’s enough here to provide the scratch for my adventurous itch and occupy my time for two whole weeks.  😊

Gorgeous entrance!
This is our bathroom window view.
I couldn’t wait until morning to take a picture!
Grilling chicken for sandwiches and reading about what’s available in the Park.
New neighbors have arrived and the people across the street made them stop for a picture. : )
Blaine says it’s a 1957 (possibly a New Yorker?), and a vintage Airstream.
Very nice! But waaay too small for me. : )

We showed up at our designated site and discovered we’ll be surrounded by Arizona ground squirrels!  They make their home on either side of our asphalted pad.  They sure are cute to watch!

And after an early dinner, when we threw our ice cubes out into the grass, the little rascals stole them.  We never thought much about it, but I’ll bet they were glad to have the water.  Although how that little thing got that big ice cube between his teeth and carried it off, we’ll never know.  😊

See the ice cube at his feet?
He’s standing beside one of the holes.

Since our drive was so short, we had plenty of time to walk around the new Park for a couple of hours after we ate.  It’s gonna be a stunningly gorgeous two weeks!  Especially once the sun makes its appearance!

We caught this coyote running alongside the road within the Park and near our campground.
This is on one of the Park’s information boards.
Looks like a nice bird, but if you take the time to read about it, you’ll see it’s really not!
This is at one of the trail entrances. A beautiful glazed tile mosaic.
A close-up of one of the sections.
There seem to be many trails that wander all over and connect with each other,
and they’re not on the map they gave us. We just followed whatever way we wanted. : )
There’s a lot I could tell you about Saguaro cactus, including how to pronounce it, but I’m saving all my vast knowledge (yeah, right! lol!) until we actually visit the Saguaro National Park in a few days.
Man, do I need a haircut!
Why in the world my husband didn’t comment on how bad I looked is beyond me.
When I left home, all that hair was tucked into a ponytail.
I don’t know what happened . . . .
(editors note: I think she always looks beautiful!)
There were lots of wildflowers blooming!
These were covering the ground all over the place and looked much better in person!
So beautiful!!
See? Those flowers are everywhere!
They have these all over too.
They look like the Tree Chollas we’ve been seeing everywhere,
but most of these actually look like trees!
Don’t know if it’s the same or not . . .
We encountered several dead cactus.
It gave us an opportunity to check them out.
The insides are just like wood!
I’ll bet these will be beautiful once they’re in full bloom!
Most of them had two balls on each stem.
Back home, Blaine went to great lengths to acquire the best possible internet service for us.
He put the booster on top of the coach. : )
