What? UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (got all that??) of which there are 8 cultural and 10 natural designated places in Canada. The US has 22 of the 981 World-wide sites. I looked at the list and Blaine and I have been to several sites in the States! We had no idea! We visited one of the Canadian cultural ones today.
Old Town Lunenburg. Based on the descriptions we read, we were expecting a quaint little fishing town – similar to what we discovered at Peggy’s Cove. It was nothing like that. Here’s what we read:
Old Town Lunenburg, UNESCO world Heritage Site.
Established in 1753, Old Town Lunenburg is the best surviving example of British planned colonial settlement in North America. Enjoy guided tales of the past by walking tour or carriage ride and learn why Lunenburg’s colorful waterfront, narrow streets, captivating architecture, and seafaring history have made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sounds nice, eh? This is reality:
I must say, it was very colorful. But sooo comercialized. We really didn’t think it would be like that.
So, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Blue Rocks were our planned destinations for the day. Lots of driving by Blaine but we did at least run across some nice views.
And had a terrific lunch view!
And other terrific views along the way –
Although driving through the town of Mahone Bay was pretty crazy!
IMG_1790 Here we go!
Here’s the bummer of the day: We stopped at a grocery store on the way home. We had decided to get some ham and turkey from the deli because we were tired of eating cheese and crackers or peanut butter for lunch. I was thrilled with the pricing – $3.99. Well, I asked for a half pound of each and went on my merry way. At home we discovered the ham was $5.50 and the turkey was $9.50! For that half pound! I don’t know what those numbers were in the deli window, but obviously they weren’t per pound! YIKES!! At $10 and $20 a pound, we better savor every bite!
And another tidbit – name brands are packaged differently here. Example: Campbell’s soup cans look different – no red & white labels. And Ritz crackers. Not only are the Ritz loose in the box and look different, but they use a different recipe. These don’t have the buttery goodness of the Ritz we know and love! Disappointing, but OK.
I’m a little behind posting. Blaine had the audacity to ask for the laptop!
I don’t know why – something about paying bills (yes, we still have those) and looking for winter camping spots . . . .
