This week, Blaine found us a nice, old Baptist Church (United Baptist) in Saco Maine, one of those old towns I mentioned between the campground and Kennebunkport.
I guess the nice thing to say is, we visited on the wrong Sunday. We walked in and had to ask where the sanctuary was. It was located upstairs. And by upstairs, I mean UP STAIRS! Two flights. Well, I call them flights, there was a turn. Beautiful wooden balustrade and carpeted steps, but still. We didn’t notice an elevator anywhere, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there wasn’t one.
The sanctuary was gorgeous! And they had a pipe organ! We couldn’t wait to hear it! We had to wait an hour and 15 minutes. They never played the prelude. And then she only played on verse of the last hymn. Disappointing! But it sounded great while it lasted. : )
It is without a doubt a female run church. Everyone in any kind of position (except for three), was headed by women. And we know that, because today, all the leaders got up and spoke about their ministry. This went on for the entire service! The Pastor did a 2-minute children’s story and dismissed the kids and she did a 10 minute (if that) sermon. We sang the first line of a couple of songs, but the rest of the time, it was just people talking. One very interesting thing we learned is that their choir (complete with robes), only has one (that’s right I said ONE) soprano! I’ve never heard of that before. Every other church has mostly sopranos. And their one soprano wasn’t there today, so an alto had to fill in.
Not a good day for visitors.
After lunch, Blaine headed out to hike, while I stayed behind today. He discovered an old cemetery (sort of) while hiking in a city park.
While he was gone, I did various and a sundry things, including a bike ride around the campground. The Amtrak runs nearby, but until today, I didn’t know HOW nearby it was! I got to a place where seasonals were camped and the only thing separating them from the tracks was a fence. Truly! I hope they get a serious discount!
One last trip to see the beach, since it will be a while before we see it again. There were a lot more people today! But that’s because it was Sunday and it was hot today – 83! And for the first time, we walked at nearly high tide. All the rocks we’ve seen before were gone. 😊
Good bye, ocean! For now . . . .
