Return to Mayberry     11/02/17

No definite plans today, so we opted to head back into town.  For one thing, we needed postcards and stamps, but there were also a couple of other things we didn’t accomplish the last time.  Oh!  And in the morning, before we left?  Blaine set out for grocery shopping at WalMart by himself.  He offered.  I was willing to let him.  He did great!  Even with some of my more unusual requests, like green chilies and flatbread.  😊

We got to Mayberry about lunchtime and decided on Snappy Lunch again after a short discussion of our options.  This time it was fried bologna sandwiches for each of us and a pink – and I mean pink like fuchsia – hot dog for Blaine.  Blaine said it was ok and it tasted like a hot dog, but we’ve never had anything like that before!  He said the bologna was better.  And I thought it was great!  It’s been a long time since I’ve had fried bologna.

A walk to the post office and then off to find a hike/bike trail that was supposed to run along the Ararat (Yep.  Just like Noah’s Mountain) River.  It was a nice, asphalted path – also with school kids on it!  They must take a lot of outdoor field trips around here, or else they drive to parks for recess.  Not sure, but there was no actual teaching going on that we heard.  Just a walk.  Hmmmm . . .

Kudzu
Introduced from Japan in the 1930’s World’s Fair (I don’t know which one).
But apparently isn’t as invasive as we’ve always thought.
It likes roadsides, but doesn’t usually go inland beyond that.
And it grows because there are no horses or cattle to keep it trimmed back. : )

Another interesting aspect to our walk today were the mile markers.  Where else do you see large granite markers, but a park in Mt Airy?

We put in a total of 4 miles.  It was above average temps today – in the upper 70’s and sunny, so we got a little warm but that’s OK.

Home and clean up, then out for dinner at ‘13 Bones’, where Blaine had a full rack of delicious ribs and I had a rib eye – yumm!  Their website told the story of their unusual name – in order to be considered a full rack of ribs, there must be 13 bones.  Well, that’s nice, but Blaine only counted 11. . .   Bless their heart!

To walk off some of our indulgent dinner, we took a stroll around the campground and were blessed with a ‘moonrise’.  Much more beautiful than it looks in the pictures!

Tomorrow we head further south.
