Happy Trails To You! 11/17/17

We started our day with a lovely sunrise . . . .

and a walk by the lake . . .

Overflow from the lake, but where does it go?

Ah! There it is!

This is part of a dam

Me thinks this part is in great need of trail maintenance!

Have no idea what these things are for, but they were near the horse show ring.   See the mailbox?  It had something in it.  : )

I don’t know what he’s looking at, and if he told me, neither of us remember. : )

Signage around here isn’t always great.

Here’s one.

Yes. But to where??

Here’s a sign – but they’re slowly being eaten by a tree!

They gave us a map when we checked in and up until today, we had no problem navigating.  Today was a little different.  But then again, we opted for a horse trail.  Maybe they don’t need signs.  Maybe because the signs were up higher, we missed them.  I don’t know.  We did run into a few snags along the way, but at least we were never lost.

There was no information on the trail itself.  It was called “Beech Trail”.

Now, doesn’t that sound like a nice walk to you?  It turned out to include a ‘climb every mountain’ section!  No rocks, but several long vertical climbs.  I wore too many clothes – even though it was only in the mid-fifties this morning.

Since we were having trouble locating the trail with ‘normal’ signs, we looked for different types –a small ditch where horses had worn a path, scuffed-up leaves,  hoof prints, horse-apples, things like that.  By the way – why is it that people are admonished to clean up after their dogs, but not their horses??

How to cross the stream . . . without getting wet . . . when you’re not a horse . . .

A stretch for Blaine, but no way could I manage.
I picked the wrong time to wear my canvas tennies hiking!

And you have to know that my knight didn’t leave me stranded.  No, he didn’t carry me, or put down a coat for me to walk on.  Instead, he extended a stick, asked me to plant a foot across the stream and pulled me across and up.  : )

The sun was shining and there are still some leaves on the trees, so it was a lovely 4-mile hike today!  At one point, we saw what we thought was broken glass on the path.  Turned out to be pieces of the rocks that were there!

We thought it looked like something they might have made into mirrors a long time ago.

We crossed a couple of bridges.

And ran across one information sign.

Here’s a picturefrom the info board.
According to the sign, we can’t get close to the spot even if we wanted to.

Now THAT’s a sign I recognize!

And then there was me – just like the proverbial horse to the barn – I took off! : )

By the time we got home, it was time for a quick lunch and then off to Bruce and Donna’s!  They’re home is about 45 minutes from where we are.

We were greeted warmly, of course and had a surprise couple of minutes to visit with their son, Gage who was home from college – – for what else?? – – laundry!  😊  It was good to see him, too.

We quickly learned that we’d be having BBQ ribs for dinner . . . cooked in the smoker!  Bruce is known for his excellence on the grill and he certainly didn’t disappoint!  They were sooooo good!  So were the green beans Donna made! And then there was the ‘fantasy’ dessert we brought!

There was an attempt made to teach me to play corn hole.  (Who came up with that name anyway??)  The problem is, I can’t throw underhand, as they soon learned!  I’ve been forbidden to play Jarts for life because of that.  (Remember Jarts?  The metal-tipped lawn darts you had to throw across the yard into a ‘hula-hoop’ ring??)  My tosses usually went straight up, or behind me, or who knows where.  Very dangerous!  I almost speared several people before being banned from the game.

Anyway, today I did better tossing the bags like a softball.  😊  But ‘better’ is a relative term.  I still only made 4 of our 21 points as most of my throws weren’t anywhere near the board.

Friends of theirs also showed up for dinner – Bruce and Laurie.  It was nice to meet them.  Turned out they’re fellow campers – but with 4 kids and 2 Great Danes!  YIKES!  We saw pictures of the dogs – about 100# each and mostly legs! 😊

A nice evening of fellowship with family and new friends and we were too busy socializing to even think about taking pictures!  We’ll try to remember next time!
