The Soo 8/7/18

Aune-Osborn Campground, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’  Matthew 16:2-3

The weatherman got it wrong once again.  A forecast for partly sunny and upper 70’s quickly became cloudy and low 60’s for the entire day!

For today’s dinner, we decided on a pork chop casserole I make, but I needed two apples.  I know.  We were just shopping yesterday, but not apples.  It’s always something!  Anyway, after lunch, we took off.  First, we walked across the street to a store, but they were just a convenience place.  No produce and really high prices!

Blaine decided to tool around town a bit, and we stumbled on Historic Water Street, where we parked and strolled the area and learned things from the information boards they had set up.

That’s The Tower of History and the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church.
We’ll most likely visit them another day.

There used to be a Fort on this Park site.

This is their nod to the fort. Just a piece of a palisade fence.

A ship came by while we were at the Park area.

Then there was this completely fenced in area.
Why?

Blaine wanted to know why the dog houses were being protected.

Eventually we found our way to the front and discovered they weren’t dog houses after all. Ooops.

This is the Post Office shown transitioning from horse drawn to cars in 1922.

After the Park, we drove to the Soo Locks Visitor Center.  Such an interesting place!  But I have no idea why it’s Soo instead of Sault.  Guess we’ll find out eventually, and when we do, I’ll be sure to let you know.  😊

We were able to watch a boat in the lock and looked around a bit inside.  Many of the ships that come through here, make their way across Lake Superior and through the channel in Duluth.  Wouldn’t it be a hoot to see the same ship again?

This is the boat we watched today, and Blaine took several pictures of it as it was lowering.

Off they go!

This is a work picture. : )

That’s the International Bridge.
See the water starting to fill back in?

The guys zip around on these little cars.
Looked like they were in a race. : )

And the tour boat enters, waiting for the water to rise so they can be on their way.

The Lock Visitor Center had all these original photographs that were excellent quality!
This one is from the 1890’s when they were building the original Poe Lock.

This was in the ladies room and cracked me up!
I’ll never look at one of these hand dryers the same without smiling again! : )

This is only a portion of the flower beds in front of the Visitor Center.
Simply lovely!

Blaine’s favorite!

When we got back on the street, we noticed there was a street Arts Fair going on, so we walked around admiring the many works here.  This is a down side of the lifestyle – we don’t buy all those little trinkets, baubles and decorations.  (Of course, Blaine thinks it’s an upside.) 😊

The city is celebrating 350 years this year!

That’s a dream catcher in the crosswalk! Cool!

Nice mural on the side of a building.
That’s the year Sault St. Marie was founded.

We were expecting weather bureau stuff in here, and there were a couple of things, but not really what we were expecting.
No pictures because a docent who was in there talked to us the whole time. About all kinds of things – like the deplorable condition of the house when the historic society took it over. It took a year and a half to restore it.

As we walked down the street back to the Jeep, a heavenly aroma wafted in the breeze.  Chocolate!  Fudge!  Now, normally I’m not a fudge girl, it’s just too sweet, but this smelled so good, we decided to give it a try.

It was a perfect blend of sweet and chocolate, nuts and caramel!  Gotta watch we don’t eat it all in one sitting!

Oh, look! A little knife comes with it!

They had lots of choices!
We settled on turtle.

Back home, it was just about time to make dinner, during which, the sun made an appearance and after which, Blaine went for a walk alone. (he’s still suffering neck pain, by the way, but I should be able to put my ring back on tomorrow)  I stayed home and listened to my country music.  😊

UPDATE:  The sun came out about 7pm.
