Visitors 02/21/19

Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring, Florida

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. ~  I Peter 4:8

It was real foggy this morning!

We had actual, real, bonified visitors today!

Blaine’s mom and dad stopped by for a couple of hours.  Wasn’t that nice?  They come down to Florida for about 3 months every winter and were moving from Point A to Point B, which happened to be through the area we were in. Blaine washed windows in anticipation of their arrival (and just because they needed it), and just as he was finishing up – – – it poured down the rain.  For about 2 minutes.  Just long enough to ruin all his hard work.  I felt bad.

We had a nice visit . . .

We drove around the loop here, and stopped to walk on the boardwalk trail for a bit. Ron spotted a tiny turtle and we heard some hawks, but that’s it today. Still, it was very pretty!

. . . and great pizza!  In fact, we would go as far as to say, one of the best we’ve ever had.  (I’d say the best, but it’s not wood fired.  😊)  We ate here last year, so Blaine though it’d be nice to let his parents experience it.  Besides the pizza, they also gave us free dessert!  Just what you need after eating two large slices of pizza!  What do you think dessert was?  Funnel cake bites!  We were soooo stuffed by the time we left there!  But every thing was eccellente! (That’s Italian for excellent. 😊)  And it was one of those meals you wish you could keep eating because it tasted so good!

Vincent’s Pizza! No picture of the funnel cake bites. : (

They were on their way by 1:30pm, so with most of the afternoon before us, we made an attempt to cram in two weeks worth of sightseeing into about 3 hours, since we lost two days at GRV and we have to check out tomorrow.  Biking and hiking as many trails as we could, but only taking a few pictures, since we did all this last year.  We were disappointed at the lack of wildlife sightings though. But at least we saw a couple of things, so that was pretty exciting!

Errrrk! I spotted a turtle on a side road, so we slid to a stop (because of the deep sand) to check it out. There were actually two! If you look close, you can see the other in the brush.
We followed them . . .
. . . . they’re really fast! . . . .
. . . . right to their hiddy hole! (Hurry up Bruno! They’re right behind me!)
Remnants of a near-1,000 year old tree. We talked last year about their efforts to save it by filling it with rebar and concrete.
Guess this tree isn’t as old, but it’s still really large!
Note how he’s blending in with his surroundings! The rust, the black, the white specks in the water . . . Isn’t God incredible?!?!?
Another tourist pointed the snake out to us, or we’duv probably missed it.
The other 1,000 year old tree. This one seems to still have some growth on it – along with the concrete.
We love the reflections you find here!
That’s a grapefruit! There were a couple more waaaay up in the tree, but no way to get them down. Darn!!

We also stopped in for orange ice cream, since they have it advertised in several places as being available.  It seemed to us that if they were going to announce its arrival like that, we should at least try it.  It was a little pricy, but really good!  And they crammed a lot of ice cream into that little cup!  It sort of tastes like if you poured orange juice over vanilla ice cream.

There it is! Orange Ice Cream!
We played a rousing game of checkers while we ate. Of course, Blaine won.

And we paid a visit to the CCC Museum, but it was almost 5pm and that’s closing time.  Plus, there wasn’t anything new here since last year.  Except – – they cut down all the trees around the building.  If you remember, this is the place where we watched them doing the prescribed burn.  Well now, there’s nothing to burn anymore!  I’m wondering if the stuff was growing so fast, they decided to cut rather than keep burning every few months?  It’s still a mess though, but maybe they’re not planning on cleaning it up.

A red-shouldered hawk!
He let us get pretty close as we approached the Museum!
But then he suddenly swooped down onto the grass . . .
. . . snatched up an anole and took off! Very cool!!
Every time I read about the Depression, I just can’t fathom the hopelessness people must have felt. : (

Tomorrow we head to python country.
