For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. ~ Romans 2:13
This afternoon found us back on the river. This time, we started where we stopped the other day and headed north, upstream. The plan was to paddle as far as we could – or wanted to, whichever came first. Then we could go downstream, either to where we began today, or all the way to the lake. If we went to the lake, Blaine’d have to ride his bike back to the Jeep and leave me by the side of the road – – again. 😊
But since we were able to go several miles upriver, no biking was necessary.
Today’s paddle was fairly uneventful, just calm and peaceful, until we were on the way back!
We heard a noise in the woods that sounded like something big. We sat and listened and looked around for a deer, and then Blaine heard a snort!
It was a family of feral hogs! Two large ones and a whole passel o’ young uns! What a discovery! And perfect timing! Thank You, Lord!
Shhh . . . there they are!
Noisy birds though. : )
Blaine’s paddling in this one, trying to get us closer. Can’t believe they didn’t run.
What a difference a day makes though! We returned home to many empty sites and quiet, but before long, a parade of campers began arriving, bringing with them young, screaming, bike-riding kids – and a couple of barking dogs. Well, it is Friday . . . .
Dinner was at Carter’s Catfish House. This place is so close to the Park, we could almost walk there, and maybe we should’ve after the copious amount of fried food and fat drenched vegetables we ate! And here’s something unusual – – – they’re only open from 3:00-9:30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
We ordered their platter for two, and three people could’ve easily eaten it! We had oysters, bay scallops, shrimp, catfish and deviled crab (which didn’t have much crab in it). It was all fresh and very good! The dinner also came with two sides per person. Blaine opted for the salad bar ($1.99 extra) and baked potato, while I chose a baked sweet potato and sautéed veggies. Had I known they were gonna sauté them in a pint of garlic butter sauce, I’d’ve tried the steamed broccoli instead! But they sure tasted good!
Here’s something else unusual about this place; once we’d ordered, the waitress asked if we wanted some pickles. We said, “Sure.” What do we know anyway, so why not? She brought us a dinner plate loaded with – – – you got it! – – – pickles! Half sweet, half dill! Do they eat pickles that much around here? The sweet pickles were actually pretty good and I ate about six of them, even though I don’t normally eat pickles.
This is probably why I was so full after dinner! Shoulda never eaten those pickles!
Did you ever wonder where the phrase, “stuffed to the gills” originated? Apparently, it comes from how whole fish are often prepared – sliced open and filled with herbs, stuffing, etc. – they’re usually stuffed all the way to their gills! We felt like those fish as we left the table and that continued well into the night! Ugh!
I think Blaine missed his long bike ride because after we arrived home from dinner, he took off without me. 😊
God has surely blessed us – – – today, and every day!
