The Devil’s Den And Quicksand 05/03/19

Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, Fancy Gap, Virginia

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, . . . But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.  ~ Joshua 24:15

Carbohydrate overload!  That’s what I faced today.  It all began with a piece of toast at breakfast and just continued on all day from there.  There was my meatloaf sandwich at lunch (two more slices of bread, in addition to the bread inside the meatloaf) – that made Blaine grimace, especially since I ate it cold.  😊

There was ziti pasta and garlic bread for dinner.  And the ever-present hiking cookies, of which I had three today!  Blaine was a little better off since he skipped the meatloaf.

And you wonder why we hike so much.  Sometimes it’s just necessary.

The weather cleared up, so we returned to Devil’s Den.  It was a wonderful, strenuous two mile hike that took us to a cave and back.

We think maybe this Devil’s Den area was part of someone’s will to keep it a nature preserve or something. We’re glad!

We even had an encounter with snakes in a tree.  Made us think of Eve in The Garden!  And here we are, at Devil’s Den!  Shudder . . .

Now tell the truth – – creepy, isn’t it?
There were actually two snakes! One left the top and slithered into a hole in the tree.
I don’t mind snakes when they’re on the ground or in an aquarium,
but I don’t particularly like knowing that they climb trees . . . .
Such a pretty flower for a weed!
A butterfly enjoying the nectar of the Pink Flame flowers.
There were several different kinds of white wildflowers on this trail.
“Yes it’s the trail. Come on down.”
Oh my! Some trail!
Made even more fun by the fact that there was poison ivy around.
Beautiful rock!
We found the cave!
We were up there somewhere.
That’s the general area where I took the picture of the butterfly.

I left these two side-by-side so you can get a bit of perspective. The left one, no Blaine. The right, Blaine. This place was huge! No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get it all into a single picture.

Blaine’s view from the inside.
There’s a bit of a view through the trees.
This is what I do when I’m waiting on Blaine to return from wherever he’s been.
I take pictures. : )
Continuing on our trail.
We’re back! There’s a family burial plot here also. A guy with bright teal hair maintains it. : ) He was mowing when we arrived the past two days.

We returned to a self-proclaimed welcoming committee of one.

Here comes the welcoming committee!

What a happy, friendly dog!  He was even making those contented groaning sounds dogs make, and of course wagging furiously.  😊

Back home for lunch and then off to check out the trails here at the campground.

Peter Pan’s at it again. The body grows old, but the mindset and attitude do not.

It’s one of his best qualities! : )

My turn!
You can’t tell from this single picture,
but I didn’t do so well.
Don’t think I ever did get off the ground. : )
There were wild violets everywhere!
Beautiful!
One of the campground’s neighbors.
Another view of the neighborhood from the trail.
If you look close on the left side near the top, you can just make out the coach.
The front yard of the motel.
The curve in the road is the BRP.
No one was staying here during the time we were staying on the grounds.
The trail took us by a pond. With a ba-zillion tadpoles in it!!
Right about the middle of the picture is one that’s a little older and has back legs growing.
Most are about a month old, but that one is probably closer to three months.
By four months (average time) they will have grown into adults.
What a strange transition that must be for them!
Is God incredible or what?!?!?
We went over to that patch of dirt/sand beach to see if we could get a better tadpole picture.

Everything was fine, until suddenly, Blaine was ankle deep in quicksand!

Fortunately, he was able to backtrack and get out of it, but look at the mess!

What a mess! But thankfully he was okay!
I took this on the way back.
The white dots seem to be the tadpoles taking in air,
but maybe they’re starting to try to catch something bigger than bits of algae.
Not a very nice birdhouse if you ask me! haha!

And we’re done for the day. Blaine’s got boots and socks to clean up.

Oh the perils of the adventurous life!
