Dining With Birds 09/16/19

Gifford Pinchot State Park, Lewisberry, Pennsylvania

He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.  ~ Proverbs 14:26

We were anxious to get out today!  We had our lunch packed, and I was wrapping up some blog stuff, and Blaine stopped in the middle of his research.  We were all set to get out and kayak.

And then it started raining!  It wasn’t supposed to rain until late this afternoon!  So we went back to work until the sun decided to finally show it’s face once and for all.

We had a grand time on the Conewago Creek!  We ate our meager lunch in the boat while watching swallows snatch up their own lunch from the water in front of us.  At one point, we were sitting under the wires where the birds were perching, and Blaine received an unexpected gift from above – – right on his shorts.  Better than in his lunch or on his head, I say.  😊

Where it all began.
We noticed as soon as we arrived that there were swallows all over the place.
There’s a bunch on the wire,
but about the same amount were flying all around snatching bugs off the water.
There were a couple of homes along the river, but not many.
He was posed upright when we first saw him.
Now he’s getting ready to take off. Herons don’t care much for us.
See!
Gorgeous, calm day!
All the dots you see in the next three pictures are swallows!
Including the dots on the water!
I was able to capture one kinda close to us at least! Most of them were too fast!

We also followed a white egret, a Great Blue Heron and a Green Heron upstream.  Why do they continue to fly ahead of us?   Why not wait until we pass, or go behind?  Silly birds!  And we spotted a couple of small-ish fish.  If there’s not many fish, then what do those silly birds eat?

White Egrets don’t like us much either, neither did the Green Heron that was here.
You can’t see him though, because he’s about the size of a robin.
It got pretty shallow in a few places.
Good thing our boat glides on top!
Some of the bugs we saw on the water.
They stayed in the water, so they were okay. : )
We were surprised to see seashells here.

Much of this creek is not very deep, in fact, at one point, we portaged the boat so we could continue.

Looks like a dead end, but it wasn’t, it went around the bend.
But not too long after, we hit too much shallow water, even after portaging, so we turned around.

And then there was the extreme close-up of that heron I mentioned.  We saw him parked on some branches in the water and because the creek flows so slowly, we were able to just float towards him for six minutes, getting ever closer, until the tip of our boat was near the branches!  We never expected him to stick around for so long!  Usually Blue Herons take off almost as soon as you spot them, and oftentimes with a loud squawk, but not this one.  In fact, once he’d decided he’d had enough and left, all we heard was the swoosh of his massive 6’ wings!

There’s the friendly Heron!
This was taken at the same time as the previous one, just zoomed in all the way.
We never expected to get any closer!
Creeping up . . . .
I was poised and ready because we kept expecting him to take off.
And . . . . that’s close enough!
Too bad we moved when he did. : )
We heard – – and felt – – the woosh of his great wings!
And he’s gone. Beautiful!
This place is set up right by our parking area.
Nice campsite! Or are they living there???
M R Ducks!
She got nervous first.
And he followed.
That’s the view of the other direction from our set in area.
No way we could go that direction! : )

What a beautiful day!  Thanks be to God, for His inexplicable gift to us!
