Big Bend National Park, Big Bend, Texas
Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”? ~ Proverbs 20:9
Another uneventful travel day – except for the quadruple mule deer sighting we had on our way out of Big Bend. First time we’d seen deer! They look nothing like the deer we have back home in Ohio. These are gray. In fact, when first spotted, we thought they were coyotes.
It took us an hour to drive out of the Park. Yep. It’s that big! And most of our 3 ½ hour, 147-mile journey to our next stop, there was hardly any traffic. Blaine was very pleased. 😊 Oh. And speaking of driving. We added 437 miles (that’s an average of 72.3 miles a day) to our Jeep this past week! And that’s just within the Park itself because we didn’t go anywhere else.
Davis Mountains State Park, Fort Davis, Texas
Blaine booked us a terrific site to enjoy for the next week! Up on a small hill, surrounded by mountains on every side! And the sites are fairly wide-spaced (of course anything would seem wide after last week 😊) and a neighbor from last week is parked in front of us. Too funny!
Once we were set up, we drove a short distance to the very small town of Fort Davis, to buy groceries at a small-town store that’s been in business since 1945. We were sure surprised by what we discovered! They had nearly everything we were looking for and nothing was outdated! No deli and no bakery, but they had other options at least so that was very good. And the prices were reasonable too.
Back home, we began excitedly preparing for our guests!
Brad and Jeannine Chesser have chosen to spend their time and resources and overcome obstacles to spend a week with us! We are so honored that they’d do that! And we’re excited to spend time with them doing the things we all love. They flew from Akron to El Paso, rented a motorhome, drove about 3 hours, and are staying in the same campground with us – but unfortunately they’re on the other side. It’s great, except that we don’t have cell service. So no texting to make arrangements. Guess we’ll just have to remember how to manage communicating the old-fashioned way. We’re all of an age, we should remember how to do that. 😊
We took a quick walk down the hill to see where Brad and Jeannine’s site was.
It’s probably about a 5-7 minute walk. Not the best, but certainly do-able. Plus, since they don’t have a car, we can drive down and pick them up as long as we have a pre-arranged time. : )
Our guests arrived around dinner time and after getting them set up, we fed them dinner at our place, introduced them to crack (Remember crack? Recipe follows in case you don’t.), and sat around and chatted. God has truly blessed us with wonderful friends – and family!
CRACK
1 C. regular Planters salted peanuts
1 C. plain M&Ms
1/2 C. craisins
Candy-making white chocolate (I use the Great Value Wal-Mart brand)
½ C. craisins
In a large bowl, microwave chocolate according to directions until fully melted. Quickly, stir in peanuts, candy and craisins, then pour and spread in a jelly roll pan lined with parchment paper if your surface isn’t non-stick. Place in refrigerator for about 30 minutes, until cold. Break into bite-sized pieces. Store in plastic bags in the refrigerator.
