Munds RV Park Resort, Munds Park, Arizona

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.  ~ Proverbs 23:20-21

Short drive today!  82 miles in 1 ½ hours.   And dropping 2,000’ in elevation plus having the wind at our back pushed us along and saved us fuel!  We had an average of 10.4mpg!  That’s the highest ever!

On our way . . .
Farewall, Mt Humphreys!
There is no way to instill in you the awe this gigantic mountain causes when you see it in person!
Even when you’re inside a big bus!
Albuquerque here we come!
Well, in that general direction anyway . . .
Worker bees, and not a mask or a glove between them.
Guess road crews are immune?
That was supposed to be our exit today!
Workers, but what are they doing??
Making a big ol’ mess on the road, that’s what! : )
A lot of wide open spaces today!
We’re on Interstate 40 – –
the same interstate we traveled when we used to go to Holden Beach, North Carolina for vacation.
We passed a very long train!
Brief sign of potential civilization . . .
Getting close!
There was a sign that said this place was open, but I’m not so sure.

Trailer Village RV Park, Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

NOT!!  The entire Grand Canyon is closed due to COVID-19!  ☹

So instead of viewing the splendor of the Canyon, we’re gonna go stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona. 😊

Homolovi State Park, Winslow, Arizona

So close to the Grand Canyon . . . . and yet so far . . . .
It’s actually 2 hours and 45 minutes away . . . : (

This became our back-up after we received word that our Grand Canyon reservation was cancelled.  Turned out to be a very nice campground with a wonderful site!  There must’ve been a lot of cancellations after Blaine secured ours, because when he made the reservation, it was the last available site.  Thank You, Father!  Now, there are a lot of empty sites.

It was a long, lonely drive to the campground.
Is that??? Nah, it couldn’t be! But it is!! Mt Humphreys, about 60 miles away!
This is the ‘back side’ from what we saw in previous weeks.
The entrance to our campground loop.

We can see for miles and miles in every direction from our coach!  Things are so far away, we can see the very long trains rolling by and can’t hear a thing!  Well, Blaine sometimes can because he’s got Superman ears, but I can’t.  And we can still Mt. Humphrey’s.

Lunchtime! We walked up that small hill to check out our surroundings.
Over there’s Mt Humphreys!
This picture is zoomed waaay in. In order to see the train. : )

Since we arrived so early, we rode our bikes over to the Visitor Center (We can do that!  It’s pretty flat here!  And there’s miles and miles of empty road within the Park.) and, as we expected, found it closed.  But they had Park brochures sitting out.

He neglected to ask me if I was ready. I was supposed to look scared, not happy. : )
Anyway. This is the Visitor Center and we didn’t see any snakes, or anything else for that matter.
These rock mounds are near the Visitor Center.
Seems there’s a trail over there, so we’ll check that out another day.
Another view from the Visitor Center.
There’s some ruins over that way somewhere.
Another day.

We opted to check out the closest point of interest today – Sunset Cemetery.  Initially we assumed this was so named because of the obvious, but it turned out to be the name of a Mormon settlement that was here back in the late 1880’s.

I neverr realized the Mormons were in Arizona.
We wondered about that pole, until we read about General Smith.
It’s their stake! The cement under it has 1876 engraved on it!
Who knew wood and barbed wire could make such a nice picture!
We don’t put the awning out often,
and this was before we discovered that high winds fly over the plains in the mid to late afternoon.
Prepping the grill for some chicken.
Isn’t he clever to set ours up on the Park’s grill??

Let’s end the day with a bit of our own history –

Our daughter-in-law, Shena sent us a picture of our youngest grandchild today and captioned it ‘Baby Blaine’.  When I saw it, I burst out laughing!  Little Cooper, sitting there with a big grin and wearing a ‘fisherman hat’.  For many years, Blaine wore a hat like that, and he didn’t fish.  It was his signature in high school and the day he took that hat off his head and placed it on mine, probably meant more to me than when he presented me with an engagement ring, because I knew he never took that hat off (not even sure if he did for bathing or sleeping), so the fact that he would ‘donate’ it to me said a lot!  Said a lot to everyone else too.

When I asked Shena how she knew about the hat, she replied, “Pictures!”.  😊

Is he not one of the most adorable 9 month olds you’ve ever seen??? : )
