Hoofing It 11/14/20

Raccoon Mountain, Chattanooga, Tennessee

There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that Light, so that through Him all men might believe.  ~ John 1:6

We returned to hiking today, covering several trails on Lookout Mountain and returning to Point Park to see the view on a clear and sunny day.

You are here!
We’ve leaving from Cravens House where there are several options to choose from.
Pretty!
A waterfall!
But it’s so small that if I wasn’t standing there with my hand held out,
you probably wouldn’t notice. : )
There were rock climbers today!
I honestly don’t know how they do that!
They have ropes for safety, but they climb with only their hands and feet!
He had to make a couple of attemps to get to this point.
Incredible to watch!
Just look at that!

Arriving at Sunset Rock, we chose our lunch spot amongst the rocks and tried to conjure up what this looked like 150 years ago when nearly 19,000 men fought here.  That’s the population of a small city!  Wonderful views from here!  It’s no wonder the generals chose here to watch and direct the battle.

Lunch view!
We wandered around on top of the rock for a few minutes before hitting the trail once again.
That’s Chattanooga down there.
Say, “Hello” to our friends, Rich and Martha!
There was an information board up here.

We left there, and made our way to Point Park.

Pink leaves!
There was gobs and gob of kudzu (or something like it) growing all over this part of the trail.
The sign says this is where the hotel used to be.
And it was that tall!
But the area here is so small, it’s hard to imagine how a hotel could actually fit.
This memorial was on the other side of the rock from the former hotel area.
97! I counted!
They lead to the Ochs Museum area at Point Park.

What a difference on a sunny day!!  We were glad we made a return trip!

Our trail took us to the Ochs Museum. Brighter day!
Better view!!
Just to compare, this was taken when we were here two days ago.
The arrow is pointing to Cravens House, where we started. : )

From Point Park, one of the trails takes you underneath the Incline Railway.  It’s a tourist attraction that we weren’t a bit interested in, but man!  Was it cool to be underneath it when it came by!  Fortunately, just about the time we arrived, one of Blaine’s brothers called and stopped us in our tracks (😊), which delayed us just long enough to catch the train.  Perfect timing!

Back on the trail, headed towards the Incline Railway area. The map says we go under it.
And there it is!
Here it comes!
And our trail continues right under it.

Once we completed our hike, there were two buildings we wanted to check out.  The first was the Presbyterian Church, simply because I spotted a sign when we were driving around up here the other day.  I figured if there was a big tourist-looking sign by the road, it must be something to see.  It was built in 1928, with other buildings added later, including the one across the street.

Our final goal for the day was to figure out what the large church-like building we could see from our campsite was.  It’s a Presbyterian college!  Covenant College is a liberal arts college that was founded in 1955 in Pasadena, California and almost immediately moved to St. Louis, Missouri.  In 1964, they moved it from St. Louis to an old hotel in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.  (remember how close we are to the borders of TN and GA)

See the “church” on top of the mountain? That’s the college!
As seen from our bathroom window.

Tomorrow we go back into town one last time.
