Paddle Right 04/08/21

Crooked River State Park, St. Marys, Georgia

Early the next morning Abimelech summoned all his officials and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.  Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us?  How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom?  You have done things to me that should not be done… What was your reason for doing this? ~ Genesis 20:8-10          And now, Abraham has been called out by this pagan king.  I think it would feel more shameful to have my sins pointed out by the world, than by God Himself!  Yes, we fear God, as we should, but having our sins displayed to the world severely harms our witness.  Abraham missed the opportunity to bring his faith and the One True God to the forefront with this pagan king and his nation.

There are three paddle trails within this State Park – one is 4.3 miles, one 6.3 and one 8.4.  We thought we should begin with the shortest one, especially since the ability to paddle here is wholly dependent upon the tides and practically perfect timing.

We’re attempting the “400s” today.

For today’s, we had to leave land 90 minutes before low tide.  And you have to wait on one of the sand bars to ride the incoming tide back to the boat launch.  The tides here are so strong, it’d be impossible for us to go against the tides.

We have a map, and we’re looking for the markers they have planted . . .  but we’re not finding any.  Well, that’s not exactly true.  We found one.  And despite what the map shows, there was no way to get around the little island we were supposed to be circling.  Good grief!

Today, we paddle to the right, along with the out-going tide.
Note the water depth and remember it for tomorrow. : )
Believe it or not, these are lumps of clay, not rocks!
Erosion seems to be a pretty big problem here.
Right about here, we saw an alligator, but it took off before we could blink!
A rainbow in the clouds!
It looked better in person. : )
Our one and only marker.

We finally gave up the search, and just enjoyed exploring.  It was kinda like being on a deserted island!  For the most part, there was nothing around but sand!  But it we had a great time wandering!

We think this is where we’re supposed to make a turn, but there’s just no water to paddle in. There could be several reasons – the low tide’s too low today, or what used to be a waterway is now filled in with sand.
Blaine’s going in search of . . . something . . . anything, to tell us where we are.
He didn’t find anything.
We moved on to another spot a little further up the river and stranded the boat so we could walk around.
Looking for adventure . . .
That’s our boat waaay over there.
Back in the kayak, we just paddled around where we could.
There are quite a few old oyster beds.

Then Blaine insisted the tide was coming in, even though it was waaay earlier than the tide chart showed, so after expending some energy convincing me, we left for home.

Need I say it?  He was right.  Again.

But he was also wrong.  He read the tide chart wrong for our return trip.

Where the tide meets the river . . .
It makes for choppy water, but here, we’re out of the boat walking around again. : )
That’s the Navy Submarine base.
We could hear a strange noise – kind of like a clacking sound – so I walked through the mud to try to figure out what it was. The further inland I went, the more I sank into the mud!
Once it got up over my shins, I decided I better turn around.
It wouldn’t do to get stuck in here, especially with the tide coming in! : )
Never did locate the source of the sound. : (
Besides, the vultures were starting to gather, which is NEVER a good sign!
Cleaning off my feet and legs.
We go out through that opening.
Blaine decided he wanted to try and check out what the buoys are for, so he started pulling one up.
He let go before he got to the end. lol

It all worked out, and just for future note – – it’s really easy to kayak with the tide.  Hardly any paddling required!

The wind picked up, and the tide was moving,
both of which made the water more choppy and bumpy on the way back. Fun!!

Ribeyes for dinner!  Blaine bought them at WalMart when he was there the other day.  They were pretty darn good!  Not quite as tender as a steakhouse, but certainly less expensive, and they tasted good!  And grilled to perfection.
