Ashland RV Park, Ashland, Nebraska

This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac.  Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.  ~ Genesis 25:19-20        Do you suppose these could be the same Arameanians my mother said would starve if I didn’t eat all my food?  😊  You know, back in the days when people – Christian or not – knew what was in scripture, many of our common phrases were developed and laws were made.  Things like “Red skies at night, sailors delight.  Red skies in morning, sailors take warning.”, comes from Matthew 16:2-3; and our medical symbol with the snake on a pole comes from Numbers 21:8.  Also of note, Aramaic was the common language in use during Jesus’s time on earth.  And the book of Daniel and parts of Ezra were originally written in Aramaic.

Within the Ashland City limits, there’s a wild life safari park.  $8 per person to get in and it’s good for the entire day – if you want to spend that long.  Yes.  It’s one of those “drive through” parks.  And yes.  After watching America’s Funniest Home Videos, we said we’d never do one of those.

However.

On this four-mile drive, you’re not allowed to feed the animals. And it shows.  The animals are there for your viewing pleasure, but they don’t try to get in your car or slobber all over you.  You can drive the loop as often as you’d like.

In addition, they have a two-mile trail you can walk to see other animals.

We got there at 9am, right when they opened and saw every animal and bird they had, except the black bears.  They must’ve been well hidden in the woods.

We did part of the drive . . .

Let the adventure begin! “I sure hope we see something to justify the $16 we just paid.”
We spotted elk just around the first corner!
Oh look! They’re growing antlers in there! lol
The ground cover was so high, you couldn’t see the bull elk lying there, just their enormous antlers!
Those antlers can grow to a length and spread of 4′, and weigh 20#, and they shed them every year in March and start growing new ones mid-April. They’re not fully grown until August.
The lighting wasn’t good here, but we spotted more bull elk.
It’s just like in Colorado – the bulls are far and away from the females.
The driving trail.
White pelicans! Wherever you might see animals, there are places to pull off the road. Very nice!

Then parked and checked out the aviary and did the trail . . .

Isn’t he marvelous?!? We saw a total of 4 of these majestic creatures in here. There was also a pair of swans, but they weren’t in a place we could get a picture. : (
Off we go!
There were at least four wolves here!
The one on the left was trying hard to get someone to romp with him, but there were no takers, so he took off into the woods. When we came back this way on our way out, there were no wolves to be seen. Great timing today!
There were numerous Sandhill Cranes and some of them were raising a ruckus. They’re very loud!

Then finished the drive.

More Sandhills.
Entering the bison area.
Oh man! Look how they have that blue care surrounded! How cool is that?!?
We had a good bit to drive to get over there.

As we were coming around to see the buffalo, we encountered a herd of female elk that weren’t listed on the map.  They were alongside the road, so we stopped to look at them, and of course take pictures.  😊

And then two suddenly became very interested in our Jeep!  Sniffing, and walking to my window!  I snapped pictures and took video as they edged closer and closer!  Fortunately, since people don’t feed them, they didn’t try to get in, but it sure was exciting!

Well, hello there!

By the time we got to the buffalo, they were off the road and enjoying the coolness of the pond.  We’ll try to get closer to buffalo another time in another place.  😊

As far as we could see, that was the only baby.
The Sandhills go anywhere they please.
The last thing we saw was the prairie dog town, which was just outside the VC. Cute little things!

Since we’d seen everything but bears, we left the Park just before lunch.  It was a terrific morning!

We can’t remember what we did with the rest of our day, but guaranteed it couldn’t hold a candle to the morning!
