Raven Run     11/01/21

Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Kentucky

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children.  “Who are these with you?”. . . “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.” . . . Then (the women and children) approached and bowed down.  Esau asked, “What do you mean by all these droves I met?”  “To find favor in your eyes, my lord.” . . . “I already have plenty, my brother.  Keep what you have for yourself.”  “No, please!  If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me.  For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.  Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.”  And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it. ~ Genesis 33:5-11        My how Esau’s attitude has changed!  Brought about by God Himself!  Maybe Jacob feels a little badly for stealing Esau’s birthright like he did, and he’s trying to make amends in the only way he knows how.  He may be trying to ‘clear the debt’ so to speak, so that he no longer feels he owes Esau anything.  On the other hand, it could be that Jacob is so elated that Esau isn’t out to get him, and in fact is welcoming him, that Jacob is just showing the depth of his gratitude – to Esau and to God.

Do ravens run?  Hmmmmm . . . .  I think I’ve only ever seen them hop and fly . . . .

We’ve stayed at Kentucky Horse Park in the past, mostly spending our time checking out the things Lexington is most noted for – thoroughbred horses and bourbon.

This time, we chose to do some different things.

Today, we visited the 734-acre Raven Run Nature Sanctuary.  They have ten miles of trails, and I know we walked quite a bit, but I don’t think we did all ten.

I think I talked about this before, but what is the difference between black birds/ravens/crows?  Since neither of us could remember, I looked it up.  I’m going to go ahead and assume you can’t remember or don’t know either.

Black birds – I know you can bake four and twenty of them in a pie, which probably means they’re pretty small.  When I looked them up, I discovered that ‘black bird’ refers to any number of birds that are all or mostly black – including ravens and crows which are definitely not small.  And unless you’re making a really super large pie for Guinness Book of World Records, there’s no way you’re getting twenty-four crows or ravens in a pie. 😊

There are several differences between Crows and Ravens.  Here’s what I found on naturemappingfoundation.org

Ravens differ from crows in appearance by their larger bill, tail shape, flight pattern and by their large size. Ravens are as big as Red-tailed Hawks, and crows are about the size of pigeons.

The raven is all black, has a 3.5-4 ft wingspan and is around 24-27 inches from head to tail. The crow is also black, has a 2.5 ft wingspan and is about 17 inches long. The raven weighs around 40 oz while the crow is 20 oz – half the weight of a raven.

The raven has highly glossed plumage showing iridescent greens, blues, and purples. Sometimes the feathers have an oily or wet sheen. Crows also have feathers with iridescent purple and blue, but with less sheen than the raven.

Ravens are uncommon in populated urban areas. If you see a “really big crow” in the city, the chances are good that it really is a crow and not a raven.

Ravens have wedge-shaped tails and crows have fan-shaped tails

Raven wings are shaped differently than are crow wings, with longer primaries (“fingers”) with more slotting between them. Ravens have pointed wings, while crows have a more blunt and splayed wing tip.

A raven’s wing sometimes makes a prominent “swish, swish” sound, while a crow’s wingbeat is usually silent.

Ravens soar more than crows. If you see a “crow” soaring for more than a few seconds, take another look – it might be a raven.

Common Ravens can do a somersault in flight and even fly upside down.

Wow! How cool would it be to see a bird fly upside down?!?!?

You’ll notice by the clothes we’re wearing, that it was cool today.  You’ll also notice that we were mostly in the gorgeous Fall woods, kicking leaves about as we walked.  What a lovely day!  So thankful for the colors God provides in the Fall!

You had to walk down this sorta road to get to the trail.
Here we go! Spectacular!
The overlook wasn’t quite what we expected, but it was still really pretty.
You can’t tell, but that fungus was gigantic!
Moore’s Spring
We found the Prather House.
Couldn’t go inside, but there was a broken window so I stuck my hands in and took this. : )
Pretty new door for such an old house . . .

We also learned stuff, which is always a plus!

On our way back – to learn stuff at the Visitor Center. : )
This is the Visitor Center. Very large, but we looked in the windows and there wasn’t much inside, so we skipped it.

Great day!  Such an incredible blessing! And then we received these pictures of our oldest son, Chris and family!

This was actually taken back in the Spring, before baby Matthew was born.
They just forgot to send it to us. : )
