Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. . . So Hamor and his son . . . went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen. . . “These men are friendly toward us . . Let them live in our land . . . But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?” And all the men . . . agreed . . . and every male in the city was circumcised. ~ Genesis 34:18-24 Did you notice how Hamor and Shechem approached the leaders? They presented it as a good business deal for everyone, not just to get a bride for Shechem. Besides the practical side of this (that’s a lot of ‘surgeries’), and thinking of the pain these men subjected themselves to – – all of them all at once – – did you notice their attitude? They’re all aware of how prosperous Jacob’s clan is. They’re doing this, not to promote peace, but to gain financial reward by ‘taking’ what God gave/is giving Jacob. So what can we learn from this? I’m thinking about greed, and how it often causes us to make poor decisions. I mean, seriously, what were these men thinking? Only about gaining more stuff. Do we do that? Do we choose the world’s way, rather than God’s way? Do we get impatient in our waiting for Him, and thus make poor decisions? Think about what you may be greedy for – Food? Family? Job? Money? Power? Acceptance? I think we all have some. Think about how this greed causes you to step away from God and His Will and Ways.
We left the northern border of Tennessee and drove to the southern, where we parked not far from the Georgia border. Less than ten miles, in fact. It took us about three hours plus a fuel stop to cover the 174 miles.
Once we got to the campground, we filled up our propane tank – $4/gallon! It used to be $3. It’s a recent hike because the girls in the office were talking about what a surprise it was when the campground got it’s most recent bill.
As I recall, the drive itself wasn’t very eventful, just some traffic a few times.

Yes, they have caverns here – five miles all told. Yes, they offer tours. No, just like last year, we’re not going. Why? You ask? Well, for one thing, you only get ¼ -mile. For another, that ¼ mile at $22.95/ticket, would cost us nearly $50! Or more depending on how much tax is. If you’re really interested, look them up on-line and take a gander at the pictures on their website. They’re probably better than any we’d take anyway.
