Raccoon Mountain Campground and Caverns, Chattanooga, Tennessee

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.  We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”  But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?” ~ Genesis 34:30-31        Honestly, I don’t know what to make of this.  On the one hand, the brothers were right to defend their sisters’ honor.  On the other, the defense is a bit like getting the electric chair for taking a penny – especially since Dinah seemed to be a willing participant with Shechem.  On the one hand, Jacob seems to be only concerned about himself and the potential for retaliation.  On the other, Jacob has his covenant promise from God to multiply him ‘as many as the stars in the sky’, and you can’t do that if you’re dead.  On the one hand, where was God in this? (Did they ask Him?)  On the other, where was God in this? (Why didn’t He stop it?  He didn’t even seem to call Levi and Simeon to task.)

Jacob Meets Esau - Short Bible Stories

I use our old photos as a screen saver for my laptop.  Usually, I pull up the same month we’re in, but a different year.  This month I decided to forego the norm and have been looking at our Alaska pictures from 2005.  They remind me of my Father’s majesty – from the tallest mountain (Denali at 20,310’- tallest in N. America and third tallest in the list of one from each continent according the National Geographic) . . . .

Mt Denali
Mt Denali from the scenic plane we took!
According to our pilot, those two peaks are a mile apart!

to the smallest flower . . .

This is fireweed. I’m sure it’s not the smallest flower,
but back then I wasn’t noticing the little things like I do now. : )

From the most gigantic of creatures . . .

Our whale-watching cruise
We were killing time before returning our rental.

to the tiniest . . .

This is a pika, the smallest member of the rabbit family, believe it or not.
They weigh an average of 5 ounces and are about 6 inches long. No tail.

From natural wonders . . .

A calving glacier
Hiking next to a glacier

to the ingenuity He gave man to create their own . . .

The Alaska Pipeline
Independence Mine.
They were in the process of restoring it when we visited.
Wonder if they’ve made any progress? Personally, we loved it the way it was! : )

And I’m reminded that this is where my sense of adventure was reignited as Blaine and I left the cruise ship and rented a 27’ Class C motorhome.  Of course, I didn’t know then this would be my life in 12 years.  But Blaine did.

Besides reminiscing, I did some more Christmas shopping and blogging.  Blaine however, decided to get some strenuous exercise and hiked to the top of Raccoon Mountain right from our campground.  It was a beautiful day when he started out, but an unexpected/unpredicted rainstorm nearly soaked him on the way back down!

An old abandoned mining tower.
Ropes were needed to claim the steepest parts.
Looking down upon the campground.
Finally to the top of raccoon mountain. More abandoned mining equipment.
It’s starting to sprinkle, better head back down.
