Flat Or Not      04/29/22

Seven Points Campground, Nashville, Tennessee

When he (Joseph’s steward) caught up with them (Joseph’s brothers), he repeated these words to them (see yesterday’s post).  But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things?  Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!  We even brought back to you…the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks.  So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?  If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.” ~ Genesis 44:6-9       I wonder which of the brothers made this rash statement?  Reuben?  Judah?  Seems likely to me that it was one of them.  I’m thinking Reuben because he seems the most impulsive to me.  How often do we speak without considering what we’re saying!  Especially to our loved ones, our children, our spouse.  How often does our tongue lash out ahead of our brain?  Much like a serpent’s, as we respond to things we read on Facebook, or any of the other forms of media available today?  Are we not like these brothers?  Making outlandish statements or agreeing without really thinking about it?  James chapter 3 has much to say about the ways of the tongue.  What if we all prayed this each morning, “Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3)?  Imagine a world if everyone did this!

Good morning, Hermitage!

Someone lied.

I don’t know if it was Blaine, or the person who wrote the bike trail review, but someone most definitely did.  The other option?  The person who wrote the review may have been delusional.  I don’t know.  I didn’t read the review.

“Mostly flat”.  HA!

It wasn’t as bad as the last one we got caught up in, but at one place on this one, even Blaine had to push!  I did several times.  These weren’t long rolling hills, they were fairly small, but steep – and frequent.

I was motivated (though quite grumbly; especially in the beginning) by the desire to compensate for the burgers Blaine was making for dinner.

Nice, flat trail! So far so good!
I’m a little behind, and have stopped to take a picture because I can’t ride hills and take pictures at the same time.
This was at a little park we stopped at along the way to eat lunch.
Interesting!
See! Pushing!
And it’s not because he’s waiting on me! : )
I know it doesn’t look all that steep, but it was, and it was for a long time!
The other side of those white dots on the pavement is for the cars that drive through the neighborhood we’re in.

We saw some nice things, were surprised to come across a mansion, and with perfect timing on the bridge (our final destination), we were able to catch the General Jackson as it paddle-wheeled down the Cumberland River.  Guess it’s good I went the slow pace I did, huh?  😊

Gorgeous! And they had several around the grounds!
Based on the nicest side of the house we saw, this seems to be the side of the house,
although it looks like the back . . . .
Stunning! The earlier picture I took when we first arrived, was taken to the right of this.
This is the Buchanan-Harding house, but also the opposite side of the mansion from the first picture I took.
See why I say it had to be the side rather than the back? : )
A peek in the windows told us that it does get used, at least on occasion,
but not another living soul was around today.
Maybe they haven’t been here since Christmas?
But then again, that window on the far side was wide open!
Two magnolias and a maple on the lawn and they were all huge!!
Back on the bike trail . . . Another flat area. : )
And there’s our final destination! The center of the bridge. Altogether, we rode about 18 miles.
Here comes the General Jackson!

Built by the largest inland shipbuilder in the United States, Jeffboat, located in Indiana, the General Jackson was launched on the Ohio River in Indiana to start the journey to its new home on Nashville’s Cumberland River on April 20, 1985.

It can hold 1,000 passengers plus crew.  There only appeared to be a few people on board, but when I was looking for the capacity, I discovered that they have musical shows during both the early (which is what we saw) and dinner shows.  And they serve a full course meal at both as well.  Tickets for the 2 ½ hour cruise, meal and show will run you $65, or $95 if you want to sit at the captain’s table. ~generaljackson.com

Hey . . . if the captain is sitting at your table, who’s driving the boat??

Spotted this just as we were leaving the bridge.
I’m gonna need it! : )
Taking a break to check out the water.
This is a Crossvine. Isn’t it pretty
Even the bridge had a small grade to it!

On the way back, with miles still to go, I popped my chain again, trying to peddle up a hill.  I swear I was trying to do it exactly the way Blaine’s tried to teach me!  Personally, between you, me and the bedpost, I think my bike doesn’t always react the way it’s supposed to and that’s why the chain popped.  But wha’do I know?  So, that made me a nervous nelly the rest of the way, afraid it would pop again and we’d have to push the rest of the miles.  Or at least I would, because once Blaine got back to the Jeep and went home to get tools and then come find me, I’d probably be almost done.  And maybe done in, to boot.  He somehow managed to fix it without benefit of anything except an empty sandwich bag and an empty snack bag.  (Those were to cover his hands to try to keep them as clean as possible, but he still got greasy.)

Oooops!
I was using two hands to hold the bike for Blaine, so I couldn’t take a picture until he was done.
Thanks, baby!

You should pray for Blaine every day.  Life with me 24/7 is not easy.  Sigh . . . . .

On the drive home, we made a short stop at the COE Visitor Center.  We were here four years ago. Actually, we did a small portion of the bike trail then too, but only remember a few bits and pieces.  Obviously, insert sarcastic eye roll here or I might not have made today’s journey.  So if you see pictures that seem familiar, that’s why.

Think any of our current congressmen would step up like that? Hmmmmm . . . .

Tomorrow we’ll be touring around the Nashville area.  We’re hoping that since it’s not a work day the traffic will be lighter.  One can always hope, right?

By the way.  The burgers were excellent!  Worth every turn of the pedal!
