Reuben 03/27/19

O’leno State Park, High Springs, Florida

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~ Ephesians 2:8-10

After lunch today, we managed a 5-mile loop walk without taking hardly any pictures.  😊  That’s because either we walked it recently, or it looked the same.  But never fear!  We weren’t without adventure!

Since it was between ten and two, we were finally able to stop in and see what was in the tiny CCC museum.  The information on how the town was named refreshed our memories and was still pretty interesting.  The town was originally named Keno and had a bit of a gambling reputation, so when they wanted a Post Office, the government wouldn’t issue one because of the Keno association.  Personally, I didn’t realize Keno’s been around that long.  My how times have changed!  So anyway, the main man in town, Col. Whetstone, changed the name to Leno.  (the next letter in the alphabet), and they got their Post Office.  Then tragedy struck and the people ended up leaving the town, so it became known as Old Leno.  Eventually, the letters/words ran together, making it O’Leno.  And here we are today.  Staying in O’Leno State Park.

You know what this means – – more history!
Someone took an enormous amount of time to make a timeline for the life of this 800-year-old tree, but it’s fascinating to read! Wouldn’t you think an 800-year-old tree would be bigger around than that?
Cypress must grow slowly . . .
Old pictures of the building we’re in and others around the Park
An “original” Keno game. We took one look at this
and immediately thought of Bingo – – even before we read about it. : )
This is the picture as it was behind the glass barrier.
This is what I was able to do with it once I got it into my laptop!
Great shape more than 80 years later!

We didn’t actually begin our walk until almost 1pm.  Just a loop on some equestrian trails (no horses today) that we’d done last year.

Still some puddles from the rain several days ago.
We spotted an alligator here last year, but not today.
There’s a barricade, but not for us!
Maybe it’s to keep bikes from barreling into the sink?
Or a hitching post for horses?
Right there, on the edge of that island, is where the gator was last year.
None of this green stuff was here then.
This looked like lush green carpet! If you didn’t know better, you’d think you could walk right out on it!
Someone’s been sleeping in my bed!
All these things are familiar to us, but different at the same time.
In this place, there were little whirlpools dancing across the water.
Not today.

There was also a trip down a service road to check out the river.  At the turn, we were faced with a very large prescribed burn area – at least large compared to others we’ve come across the past two years.  It must have been fairly recent, because you could still smell it.

You can’t tell from the picture (I say that a lot, don’t I?), but this burn area is huge!
This is sort of a “before” picture. The other side of the road.
Burning makes it easier to spot the gopher tortoise burrows. : )
Here’s a perspective for you.
A circle of life! How unusual is that?!?
Rising from the ashes.
Scorched, but not dead.

At the river, we noticed a big difference in the water level from last year, when the water was much higher.

Note the river, and Blaine in contemplation about whether or not we should kayak here. I usually just walk away when he gets like that. Half the time, he doesn’t listen to me when he’s not concentrating, he’s surely not going to when he is! : )
This is about the area where the water was last year! Big difference!
Most people say they believe (because no one knows for certain) the Cypress knees are for stabilization. Others claim they’re for oxygen since Cypress are found in water. We don’t fall on one side or the other, but this is a rare opportunity to see an uncovered root. Kinda makes you wonder about stabilization, doesn’t it?
I noticed this teeny mushroom fungus, about the size of my pinky nail, as I waited for Blaine to complete his contemplation.
Remember this lake for the next couple of posts. I’ve got a story to share. . .
Ogden Lake
We came across a Cypress knee forest!
We didn’t see this last year, so it must be because the water level is down.
It was very cool looking! Fairytale-ish!
That is one tall knee!
Signs of life sprouting from this knee!
An even taller, fatter knee, I might add.
We’ve never seen that before.

Two hours later, we were home and anxious to get dinner started!  We’ve been sooo looking forward to it!  For days!  Reubens and potato salad.  I haven’t made Reubens for ages because we never find the corned beef on sale, but we finally realized that if we only buy enough for two sandwiches (half a pound), it’s not really that expensive, even when you pay full price.  😊

Almost complete! The secret to a great Reuben is using quality ingredients. These will be a little different since we decided to put a huge dent in the jar of Big Mac sauce we’ve had for quite some time. It’s similar to Thousand Island dressing, but not quite the same.
Best potato salad I’ve ever made! Not sure why. The only reason I can come up with is maybe I’ve never mixed Miracle Whip and Helman’s.
Dinner bell’s ringing! Don’t they look delicious? They were!

Once again, the Lord provided us with a beautiful day and “something to write home about”!  We are so very blessed!
