Turkeys And Tree Goblins 08/28/19

Wassawki Springs Campground, Scarborough, Maine

Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.  ~ Proverbs 13:6

Does the name ‘Old Orchard Beach’ sound familiar to you?  We visited there 23 months ago.  You don’t remember?  Really?  It’s the place where we discovered the amusement park on the beach that was closed and the teen boys swimming in the frigid water on a frigid day, and the pier was closed.  Still no recollection?  What if I told you it’s the beach where 25-year-old Charles Lindbergh landed because of fog in 1927 as he was making his Victory Tour following his successful flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris?  Still nothing?  Maybe just a hint in the back of your mind somewhere? (hahaha! I don’t expect you to remember! We barely did! 😊)

Well, we rediscovered it today!

We were riding our bikes on a great trail, when we came to a street sign labeled “Old Orchard Beach Road”.  We had no idea we were that close!  Blaine checked Google Maps, and sure enough!  We were going to ride to it, it was that close, but it would’ve required riding on a narrow road with no bike lane for several miles.  Nope.

So we turned around (we were ready to be done biking anyway), and then drove to the beach, where we sat and soaked up the sun and the waves.  It was waaaaay more crowed than the last time we were here!  Of course, it was also warmer and the end of summer instead of the beginning of fall.  Blaine ended up buying new water shoes which he was sorely in need of, and we walked around the touristy town looking for something to eat, and finding nothing worth spending a tourist-town-fortune on.  So Subway turkey it was!  😊

So now you know what we did, let’s do the tour in pictures.

Trail information.
It was a gorgeous day to ride!
Blaine’s decided to explore.
This wasn’t part of the trail.
This is the end of our ride in this direction.
We’re supposed to turn and ride on that road. No thank you, very much!
We turned around and headed back the way we came.
If I remember right, this is a Rose of Sharon bush.
We went back across the marsh.
Blaine went back up the road he explored earlier, in an attempt to find
the observation tower we’d seen in the distance when we were kayaking in the marsh.
Looks like we weren’t the only ones happy to find a rafter of turkeys!
They went down into the ditch and I was determined to get a closer picture. : )
And I did! But I should’ve traded phones with Blaine because his would’ve taken a better picture.
I flushed ’em right out into traffic!
And yes, of course a car came by as they were crossing.
Thankfully the car stopped, or I would’ve felt really bad!
We had to ride in the grass, but Blaine found the tower.
No one was around, and we couldn’t get to the very top because they had it closed off. Darn!
That’s the area where we were kayaking yesterday, as viewed from the tower.
Back where we parked the Jeep, we took off in the other direction to see what we could find.
This is where we discovered how close we were to Old Orchard Beach.
You can hardly see the stop sign from the trail! Good thing it’s for bikers/hikers and not cars.
OOB stands for Old Orchard Beach.
Looky there! A tree goblin!
Good thing I was waiting on Blaine and looking all around, or we would’ve missed it!
We discovered another one on the opposite side of the tree.
We took two pictures while we sat on our bench.
We were a little far from the water, but we could see quite well.
The amusement park didn’t open until later this afternoon.

It was a marvelous side trip the Lord took us on today!  We very much enjoyed sitting on a bench and taking in His creation – the breeze, the water, the sun, the sand – and the people!
